"Top Priority -Treat Your Mouth With Care" By Steve Johnson

Many people do not know that good oral hygiene is a huge factor in overall good health. People who take the time to take care of their teeth and gums will certainly live better and healthier lives than those who don’t. One of the biggest negative affects of poor oral hygiene is Gum Disease. This is when the tissues around the teeth become infected, inflamed, and can cause tooth decay and loss.

There are two stages of gum disease and they are Periodontitis and Gingivitis. Gingivitis comes first and causes inflamed gums that bleed very easily when you brush. If this first stage is not caught and taken care of within a timely manner, it can turn into Periodontitis. This is when the gums will actually loosen away from the teeth leaving spaces where bacteria can grow and cause damage. The damage can be not only to the gums but the bone that holds the teeth in the jaw. If this continues, teeth can loosen and fall out. Sometimes, surgery is even needed.

Everyone has plaque in their mouth – it is a normal matter created by the foods we eat mixed with saliva and bacteria. The plaque actually turns into tartar when it hardens if it is not brushed or flossed off the teeth on a regular basis. If the tartar is left on the teeth, it can spread downward toward the gums and roots of the teeth. This is when problems start to occur. Regular visits to the dentist can prevent this spread of toxic substances because of the special tools they use to reach areas that a toothbrush cannot. The plaque and tartar are more likely to occur and cause problems if you do not brush your teeth well enough, smoke or chew tobacco or even have a poor diet deficient in vitamins and minerals. Gum disease can also be genetic so if people in your family have a history of it, you should take more precautions.

The symptoms of gum disease are very prevalent. If you start to develop Gingivitis, you will see that your gums are swollen and red. They will start to bleed when you brush or floss. If the condition worsens, you will see your gums actually start to peel away from the tooth. You could also have consistent bad breath and pus coming from the gums. When your teeth become lose or the position of your bite changes, it may be time for extensive treatments. If the case is mild enough, some infections can be taken care of by just brushing and flossing more often and getting a thorough cleaning at the dentists. If the case is more extreme, the dentist may have to go in with special tools to clean deep under the gum line and you may have to take antibiotics to help get rid of the infection.

The best way to deal with gum disease, however, is to do everything possible to prevent the disease. Brushing your teeth at least twice a daily and flossing are probably the best and easiest ways to go about doing this. Many people are afraid of going to the dentist, but if you go on a regular basis, they could be your best friend! If you do start to develop swollen or red gums, take care of it right away before it worsens. Studies have shown a direct link between gum disease and heart disease so taking care of your mouth should be a top priority! Also, if you want whiter teeth and a prettier smile, using Dentazyne and Crest Whiting Strips will give you not only a healthy mouth but that glistening smile as well!
