About 17% of adult Americans aged 20 and over have reported having high cholesterol. That’s too high now days when there thing you can do to lower your cholesterol. Once your cholesterol is too high it doesn’t mean it too late to fix, in fact will a little bit of work your cholesterol could be back to normal in a few months. Take these simple steps and your cholesterol will be back to normal in no time.

If you know you have high cholesterol the first step to take to get it lower is to start eating right. Avoid foods high in saturated fat and that are high in cholesterol like; fatty meats, egg yolks, and full fat dairy products. To lower the fat in food choose a different low-fat cooking method instead of frying your food try broiling, baking, boiling, or roasting your food this will help your cut some fat from your food.

Increase starches and fiber in your diet. Including more of these will help lower your cholesterol as well as your risk for other disease (high blood sugar and obesity). Eating soluble fiber in your diet will also help by sweeping out cholesterol in the body before it gets into your blood stream, foods that are rich with soluble are; oat bran, dried beans and peas.

If you are over weight you should start getting ride of the extra weight. This will drop your cholesterol levels significantly. Shedding 5 to 10 pounds could lower your levels greatly, make sure you don’t do crash dieting but take it slowly with exercise and weight lighting. Try working out at least 3 times a week go for a walk around the neighborhood or run on a tread mill any type of exercise will help.

Have a glass of wine or a beer. Studies have shown that a glass of wine with dinner or a bottle of beer has shown to boost levels of HDL cholesterol (the good type of cholesterol). Make sure the wine is a red wine because red wine is 3-10 times higher in plant compounds called saponins. If you don’t like red wine drink grape juice this is rich in flavonoids that lower cholesterol.
